Leave a Legacy

What Will your Legacy Be?

Write or amend your will to leave a legacy to Break the Silence and help make a positive difference to the lives of those affected by childhood sexual abuse/rape.

Since 2004, Break the Silence have provided support to survivors of childhood sexual abuse/rape across Ayrshire.  As at May 2016, we have helped 1,768 local people and with a gift from you, we could help even more.

We have transformed the lives of many survivors by helping them to move on from the horror of the crimes committed against them. Together we can help survivors learn new, healthier coping strategies, break free from shame, anxiety, fear, guilt and be positively empowered to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.
“Making a will is one of the most important things we can do – after all it determines how our most personal possessions and hard-earned savings will be shared among close family and friends”.

“It is often a simple and inexpensive process. But failure to make a will can pose major difficulties for those left behind, for instance, by paying more tax than necessary. Your estate – money, other assets and possessions – could be distributed according to the law rather than your wishes. It is particularly important to leave instructions if you own property”. The Law Society of Scotland’s website, June 2016

Every gift, small or large does make a difference and will be received with gratitude. A legacy gift is an opportunity to make a lasting contribution with no immediate financial outlay and it can also be tax effective as gifts to charities can be exempt from inheritance tax.

Types of Gift

Residual bequest: a gift of the remainder of the estate (or proportion of the remainder) after all payments, taxes, bequests have been made.
Pecuniary bequest: a gift of a fixed sum of money.
Specific bequest : a specific personal possession.

Already have a will?  You can still leave a gift through a codicil. A codicil is a document used to change a will that has already been made.
